Have to Share!

Hey, I said I was going to take it easy not that I was going to be completely gone. I might pop in every now and then, but don't expect much.

Which means I can still show off some work that I am quickly falling in love with. This is very rare, as with most people that lead a creative life I think everything I do sucks. However; there is a rare occasion where I do something even I am impressed by. Yeah that's right, my internal critic has nothing negative to say.

Because of this ground breaking moment that comes along maybe four times a year, I just had to share with everyone what has me shining today. Last night in the wee hours of the morning I completed a homework assignment that going into I knew it was going to suck. I was working with tools I haven't worked with before, I was tired, annoyed, and my past with inking with a quill has never been successful. Needless to say I KILLED this assignment (at least in my own mind, grades haven't come in yet.)

The assignment was to take a movie script and translate it into comic pages. I ended up doing the Nightmare Before Christmas, because I was still on my Halloween kick. Feast your eyes on my opening!

(The Nightmare before Christmas is not mine, I simply used the script for educational perhaps. These pages are strictly my interpretation of the script.)
Not saying they are perfect, I can pick out a few things I would have loved to fix up if I had time. But the first panel on page 1, KILLED IT!! The trees are insane, the roots are so darn cool, and the texture on the grass, I still can't believe I did this.

For those of you who don't recognize this portion of the movie here is the script I was working off of.

NARRATOR
'Twas a long time ago, longer now than it seems, in a place
that perhaps you've seen in your dreams.  For the story that you are
about to be told, took place in the holiday worlds of old.  Now, you've
probably wondered where holidays come from.  If you haven't, I'd say it's
time you begun.

        This Is Halloween

SHADOW
Boys and girls of every age
Wouldn't you like to see something strange?

SIAMESE SHADOW
Come with us and you will see
This, our town of Halloween

PUMPKIN PATCH CHORUS
This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Pumpkins scream in the dead of night

A little selfish but I am sure you can all live without me, and don't worry you guys can't get rid of me. For now though I a canceling my cyber Monday sell and all giveaways this month. Sorry for the sudden news break but life is what it is.

Not sure how long I am going to be gone, but hopefully not to long and I will be sure to return with much more insanity for everyone.

Work Process & Illustration Giveaway

So I have been up to my eyeballs in work lately, and I though to myself. Why not give everyone a little peek.

Along with this little step by step process I am doing my very first giveaway.

Why, you ask?

Well I noticed Amazon was doing count down sales to Black Friday, so I thought I would do a count down to Cyber Monday.

On Monday December 2, 2013 I will be holding my own sale on per-made book covers, but leading up to that every week I will be doing a new giveaway.
Stay tuned for more details and giveaways as the month goes on.

This is a character illustration I have been working on for Megan D Martin, for her new book coming out Skin Deep. Keep an eye out for it!

1. So I start with my sketch, all scanned in and cleaned up a little. All ready for inking.

2. Nice clean inked outline all ready to go.

3. Next I lay in the flat base colors, and I also put the background in. That way I can see how all the colors are going to work together. When I am doing a background that is just plain gradient it helps to remind where my light source is coming from.

4. At this stage I have put in the shadows, just the basic area where the shadows are going to be.

5. After the shadows look good, I go in and define the details in the shadow area.

6. Add the highlights and the boarder with a blur to give it a polished look.

7. To give it a little something more I add a cast shadow and darken the shadows on the character, and there you have it.

To celebrate the season I am giving away a character illustration like the one I just showed off. So don't forget to sign up!
